The most interesting rooms in Cherry Creek right now are on a rooftop that used to be members-only and on a plaza that has quietly become the neighborhood's living room.

The Rooftop That Wasn't Yours Before
The single biggest change to the summer map is the Clayton Hotel & Members Club at 233 Clayton Street. From July 8 through October 4, the rooftop is hosting SHEEP, a rooftop pop-up from Michelin two-star chef Kelly Whitaker of The Wolf's Tailor. That in itself would be news. The bigger news is access: this marks the first time the Clayton Hotel rooftop has been open to the public, not just members.
The concept is deliberately a foil to Whitaker's flagship. It leans on open-fire cooking, grain-forward plates, and a lighter, more accessible vibe than The Wolf's Tailor. Translation for a Tuesday night: you can sit down without a jacket, without a two-week runway, and still eat food from a kitchen that carries two Michelin stars on its résumé.
A caveat worth taking seriously. Reservations are now live and are expected to move fast on weekends. If you want to bring visitors in September, book in August.
Fillmore Plaza Is Doing the Heavy Lifting
The other structural change this summer is where the neighborhood's public life is concentrated. Fillmore Plaza, the closed-street stretch between First and Second, has become the anchor for nearly every free event on the calendar. This is not a coincidence. It is a programming decision by the district, and it has quietly turned a block that used to be a shortcut into the reason people spend a full Saturday here.

The Arts Festival is the marquee. CherryArts is featuring 260 artists selected by the 2026 jury, including 20 award winners returning from the 2025 show and 5 emerging artists, and it remains free. Denver French Fest lands the following weekend. The Rocky Mountain French American Chamber of Commerce returns to Fillmore Plaza July 10 to 12 with a free, family-friendly, pet-friendly festival built around live music, a curated market, family programming, a fashion show, and ticketed wine and culinary experiences. Bastille Day itself is July 14, and this is the neighborhood's answer to it.
Smash is the sleeper. Now in its eighth year in Cherry Creek, Smash turns Fillmore Street between First and Second Avenue into an outdoor gallery, with artists showing sculpture, painting, photography, jewelry, and mixed media. The June weekend already passed. The August 8 to 9 return is the one to catch, and unlike the Arts Festival crowds, Smash is polished enough for Cherry Creek but not so buttoned-up that you feel afraid to ask a question, with live violin, piano and acoustic music rather than a mainstage. It is the version of an art fair where you can browse with an iced coffee.
The Mall Got a Wood Fire
The Cherry Creek Shopping Center is not usually where locals send visitors for dinner. That may change this year. In early April, Sean Huggard's Shucking Good Hospitality opened Ash & Agave at 3000 East 1st Avenue, Suite 185, in the space that used to house California Pizza Kitchen, next to Kona Grill and 801 Chophouse.
The pitch is coastal Mexican with a specific piece of theater: a "Carne Locker" with premium cuts prepared over a 900-degree fire, alongside shareable plates like wood-grilled oysters and mix-and-match tacos. The oysters come from the group's own farm, which is the reason to order them here rather than at another Cherry Creek raw bar.
Two useful data points for locals. First, the design brief. Think coastal, resort-style atmosphere with greenery, lounge seating, and wood-fired meats and fresh seafood from the group's Blue Island Oyster Farm. Second, the competitive read from someone who watches openings for a living: Ash and Agave is competing against Toro and Alteño in Cherry Creek's upscale Mexican lane, and it should be a good fight. If you have not been in a while, this is a real reason to walk back into the mall.
Still Under Wraps, But Worth Watching
Two other rooms are being built out right now behind construction paper. Both matter for how the fall reads.
The Henry, from Fox Restaurant Concepts, is going into 201 Fillmore Street. The new spot will be part of an eight-story mixed-use development with 130,000 square feet of office space and 8,600 square feet of retail, and The Henry is expected to have a patio in the alley outside the building with string lights and greenery, featuring both a restaurant and bar concept. Fall or winter 2026 is the working window. This is the Colorado debut for a group that already runs North Italia, Flower Child, and Culinary Dropout locally, so the operational muscle is real.
The other one is Uchiko. Uchiko is taking a 7,400-square-foot space that blends multiple dining environments into a single layout, anchored by a central sushi bar, with a private dining room, bar seating, and a large sunroom addition that expands the footprint beyond a traditional restaurant layout. The sunroom is the tell. This is a room designed for the exact stretch of Cherry Creek weather we are in right now.
Both are worth watching quietly rather than lining up for. Openings in this neighborhood tend to slip a season.
A Walkable Weekend, Actually Planned
If you are hosting people between now and Labor Day, here is a schedule that treats the neighborhood the way it wants to be treated this year.
- Friday evening. SHEEP on the Clayton rooftop, early seating. Book at least a week out.
- Saturday morning. Coffee on Fillmore, then wander whatever is programmed on the plaza. On August 8 and 9, that is Smash.
- Saturday night. Ash & Agave, with a stop at the raw bar side before you commit to the Carne Locker.
- Sunday. The 3rd Avenue side of the Arts Festival footprint stays quieter than the plaza. If your July weekend is Arts Festival weekend, Sunday morning before 11 is the civilized window.
None of this requires driving. That is the argument for staying in the neighborhood for the weekend rather than defaulting to LoDo or RiNo when guests are in town.
